Santa will ride through Green Valley, Columbia Heights, and Douglas Park – on Saturday, December 16th – Time and Route

Hi neighbors,

A little elf recently let me know that Santa plans to visit Fire Station #9 in Douglas Park again this year, and that he’s looking forward to another cruise around the neighborhood to check up on all the neighborhood girls and boys! Starting at 11:30 AM on Saturday, 12/16, Santa will ride through Green Valley, Columbia Heights and Douglas Park for an hour, ending back at the fire station at 12:30PM.

The route is nearly identical to last year’s with two small changes. Santa will circle John Robinson Jr Town Square during the Green Valley Community Holiday Fellowship event, and he will ride down 17th Rd in east Green Valley as opposed to 17th St. See planned route here:

Santa’s Route

The following is an estimated timetable of Santa’s ride:

11:30 – Santa leaves FS #9
11:40 – John Robinson Jr. Town square in Green Valley
11:50 – Through Eastern Green Valley near OLQP
11:55 – Columbia Heights
12:05 – 16th St in Douglas Park
12:10 – Barcroft Apartments
12:15 – Quincy by Abingdon
12:20 – 14TH and Oakland
12:25 – Santa returns to FS #9.

Note that upon returning to the station, Santa may have some time to meet with kids provided he and the fire crew are not called upon. I will provide additional updates on that and any other info as his return nears.

As a reminder, the members of ACFD Station #9 are excited to share their holiday cheer, so please, let’s show them how much we appreciate them! If you can, spread the word to any local listservs, message groups or social media pages you can to ensure a big turnout for both Santa and our neighborhood protectors!

Notification of Demolition of the Fenwick Building

This correspondence is being sent as notification of the upcoming demolition of the Fenwick Building, located at 800 South Walter Reed Drive. The Fenwick Building demolition is necessary to clear the site for future construction of the new Arlington Career Center, construction of which is scheduled to commence in the 1st half of 2024.

Mobilization of the demolition contractor to the site is pending the release of the demolition permit by Arlington County. At this time, we anticipate demolition activities will commence in early August and continue to the end of September 2023.

  • Renderings of The Elliott apartments on Columbia Pike (via Arlington County)
    • An apartment redevelopment proposed for a strip mall on Columbia Pike is stalled for the foreseeable future after the anchor tenant — a grocery store — fell through. But some of the existing tenants, including the restaurant Atilla’s, have already moved out. And now, the Fillmore Gardens shopping center on the 2600 block of the Pike, which includes a still-operating CVS, is attracting graffiti artists and other signs of blight, according to neighbors.Penrose Civic Association President Alex Sakes says the development was “slated to become a new crown jewel” but is now “an unbelievable embarrassment.”“The never ending graffiti and garbage is truly appalling and gets worse by the day,” he said. “My residents and I don’t just work here or drive past this site — we live here. We take great pride in our neighborhood and are happy to step up to help beautify this site once again. I’m not here to point fingers or place blame, but the condition of this site cannot and will not continue to perpetuate.”The Arlington County Board approved the plans to build a a 247-unit apartment complex with a ground-floor grocery store, rumored to be an Amazon Fresh, in March of 2022. Some tenants have already moved out, anticipating the project starting in late 2022 or early 2023.Progress halted in late December, however, when the grocery store tenant told the developer it would not be moving in. Without a major tenant guaranteed for the space, the developer — Insight Property Group — could not borrow the money it needed to proceed with the project, Insight’s Sarah Davidson told the Penrose Civic Association earlier this month.
